Tell us what inspired you to create this piece?

I wanted to do something for 9/11. I look at other poems online and decided to write my own.

I made copies to hand out at work and someone said “I should let the paper know”.

I mailed a copy and never heard back.

But after the 9/11 poem, that got me started writing others.

After the Special Olympics Indiana State Games in ‘07 I wrote “Belong” and “Believe”.

And, I’m still writing today.

How have your goals and dreams influenced your life and/or your art?

I would not be where I am today if it was not for my mom getting me into Special Olympics. Or, for the friends I had since I was little. Having friends makes all the difference. Special Olympics has given me the chance to be someone who can just do sports. I have the opportunity to help other athletes by being in ALPs (Athlete Leadership Programs). It’s where you can go to train to be a leader. My major is Communications. I learn to give speeches to others. I want to get more young kids involved in Special Olympics.

I like writing; it’s the only way I can think of to express myself. Typing is better for me too. My spelling is not good and I don’t like hand writing, like when you were in school.
